Meghan Markle & Diana: Thick as Thieves?
Meghan Markle style of life and outfits seems to have a lot of similarities with Princess Diana. When asked if Meghan Markle & Diana would have gotten along, Prince Harry told the BBC that they would have been “thick as thieves”.
Princess Diana and Meghan Markle seem to have a lot more in common than Prince Harry alone. Looking at this, it is not hard to believe that the two could be best friends.
Read along for the most royal looks of The Meghan Markle Style File and how the royal wedding paid a tribute to Princess Diana.
Princess Diana’s Younger Years
But before the paths they both chose started to look similar, they experienced a very different youth. While Princess Diana was born into the Aristocratic family of the Spencers in 1961, Meghan Markle’s path to a royal life was a bit longer.
Lady Diana Spencer was the daughter of Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche. Her parents divorced in 1967 when Diana was very young. Her mother left the family to be with Peter Shand Kydd, who was an Australian heir to a wallpaper fortune.
Diana told in the Neflix’ series Diana: In Her Own Words how abandoned she felt by her mother. She was very young when her parents divorced and did not understand why her mom left her.
Meghan Markle: Her Road To Succes
Megan and Diana’s stories are full of similarities and contradictions. Four days after Princess Diana and Prince Charles got Married, Meghan Markle was born. Growing up she spent a lot of time at the set of Married With Children. Her father was a lighting director on Married With Children and General Hospital. He received a Daytime Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction for a Drama Series’.
Her childhood experience on a Hollywood TV series set had a big influence on her decision to pursue an acting career. But before her breakthrough as para-legal Rachel Zane in the hit series Suits, she struggled to get a successful acting career off the ground. In an interview with The Mirror, she revealed she was once so broke that she could not afford to fix the doors of her car.
“So what I would start to do is literally go to these auditions, park at the back of the parking lot and I would open my trunk… and crawl into the back of my car to the front seat to drive off to my next audition.”
A lot has changed since then, as she is now married to Prince Harry and even more doors will open for her.
Meghan Markle & Prince Harry: The Wedding
But before we get into what Meghan will do with the new opportunities that come with life as a British royal: The wedding!
On May 19th, 2018 Rachel Meghan Markle and Prince Henry Charles Albert David married at Windsor Castle. The wedding was a total modern fairy tale. A ‘normal’ girl from LA that marries Prince Harry and becomes part of the Britsh royal family. Of course, the entire royal family attended the wedding. Because of Meghan’s ties with Hollywood, a lot of celebrities were guests at the royal wedding: George and Amal Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham and Sir Elton John.
Meghan Markle Style: A Modern Givenchy Princess Wedding Dress
Now let’s talk about Meghan Markle’s style of Dress! Meghan’s entrance was breathtakingly beautiful and immediately showed resemblance to Lady Diana’s wedding dress.
She wore a Givenchy bright white dress, designed by British designer, Clare Waight Keller. Until Meghan’s entrance, the dress had been kept a secret, so everyone was waiting to get a glimpse of the bride’s dress.
The dress had a classic bootneck style and what immediately gets attention is her tiara. Queen Mary’s Diamond Bandeau Tiara, on loan from the Queen and made in 1932.
This is what resembles strongly with Princess Diana’s wedding look, the Tiara combined with the cathedralic veil.
Her wedding look seems to be the modern classic version of Princess Diana’s wedding look in 1981. It was all beautifully put together with shows what we already knew: Meghan Markle has great style!
Meghan Markle Style: Breaking Tradition
Meghan and Harry break with the tradition by having a gospel singing at their wedding. Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir sang the American R&B classic ‘Stand By Me’.
And the American preacher Michael Curry stole the show and shook up the British royals with his message: Love is the only way!
Enthusiastically reading ‘The Power Of Love’ the bishop paid an homage to Meghan Markle’s American heritage. He quoted Martin Luther King jr. : “We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we do that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.”
A beautiful message and together with the gospel choir, a very rebellious act that stayed true to Meghan Markle style, roots and all she stands for. And that in their own way, is Harry and Meghan paying a tribute to Princess Diana, who was all about love and rebellion for the good.
